Mercury Retrograde Can’t Touch Your Manifestation: What the Law of Assumption Says

For three weeks, everyone blames Mercury. But the planet never actually moves backward; it only looks that way from where we stand. Here is what Mercury retrograde really is, what Neville Goddard said about astrology, and how to use the season for revision instead of waiting it out.

The Short Version

Mercury retrograde can’t block a manifestation. The planet never actually moves backward. For about three weeks it only looks that way from Earth. In 2026 the final retrograde runs from October 24 to November 13, in Scorpio.

In Neville Goddard’s teaching, what hardens into fact is the state you assume, not the position of a planet. The retrograde can only hurt you if you assume it will. Use the season for revision instead.

The full method is in The Law of Assumption.

What to Remember

  • 2026 retrogrades: Feb 26 to Mar 20, Jun 29 to Jul 23, and Oct 24 to Nov 13.
  • Retrograde is an optical effect of where Earth is standing. The planet never reverses.
  • Neville in 1968: “Many believe in astrology. I must confess at one time I did also.”
  • An expectation of setbacks is an assumption, and assumptions harden into fact. Guard it with the mental diet.
  • Retrograde’s theme is review and redo, which is revision.

In Plain Words

A few times a year, Mercury looks like it’s going backward in the sky, and people blame it for everything that goes wrong. But it’s not really going backward. It only looks that way because of where we’re standing.

Neville Goddard taught that your life follows what you believe about yourself, not what a planet is doing. So if you spend three weeks expecting things to go wrong, that expectation is the real problem.

Use these weeks to replay your days the way you wanted them. Start with It’s a Clock, then get The Law of Assumption.

The Planet That Never Moved Backward

For three weeks, everyone blames Mercury. The planet never actually reverses. It only looks that way from where we stand.

Since October 24, a small planet has been blamed for a great many things.

The laptop that died. The package that went to the wrong address. The text you swore you wouldn’t send. Until November 13, Mercury is retrograde, and for three weeks it will take the blame for almost everything. This is a story about why the planet is innocent, and why the thing that actually decides your results is somewhere much closer. If you are new to Neville Goddard, his answer is the one this whole site is built on: your life follows the state you assume, not the sky.

Key Terms
Mercury retrograde
The roughly three-week period, about three times a year, when Mercury appears to move backward against the stars. In 2026: Feb 26 to Mar 20, Jun 29 to Jul 23, and Oct 24 to Nov 13.
Apparent retrograde motion
The astronomical name for the effect: an illusion caused by Earth and another planet moving around the Sun at different speeds and angles.
State
In Neville Goddard’s teaching, the identity you occupy. The world reflects it back to you.
Revision
Neville’s practice of replaying an event in imagination the way you wanted it to happen, until the new version feels natural.
Law of Assumption
Neville’s teaching that whatever you assume to be true, and keep assuming, hardens into fact.

Mercury never moves backward. It only appears to, from where you’re standing. Change where you stand.

Chapter One

The shadow season

In astrology, Mercury rules communication, travel, contracts and technology. So when it turns retrograde, the advice arrives on schedule: don’t sign anything, back up your phone, expect delays, and don’t be surprised when someone from your past reappears. Many people plan around it the way they plan around a storm.

I

Figure I. Three times a year, the same warning: wait it out. For three weeks, a planet is put in charge.

Notice what that advice quietly asks of you. It asks you to hand your next three weeks to something outside yourself, and then to watch for proof. Hold that thought, because the proof is the part Neville would care about.

Chapter Two

The wanderers

The ancient Greeks called the planets planêtes, the wanderers, because they did not stay fixed like the stars. Stranger still, every so often a planet would slow down, stop, drift backward for a while, and then carry on as if nothing had happened.

Astronomers working with the Earth at the center of the universe, culminating in Ptolemy around 150 AD, had to explain those backward loops. Their solution was ingenious and enormous: wheels riding on wheels, called epicycles, turning in the heavens to produce motions that matched what they saw.

For more than a thousand years, the best minds in the world built ever more elaborate machinery to explain a backward motion. None of it was needed. The planets were never going backward.

Chapter Three

Copernicus moves the observer

In 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus published On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres and put the Sun at the center. With that one change, the backward loops explained themselves. They were never something the planets did. They were something that happened to the view, because the Earth, the place everyone was watching from, was moving too.

Read that slowly, because it is the whole Law of Assumption in one astronomical sentence. Copernicus did not fix the heavens. He moved the observer, and the problem disappeared.

Chapter Four

The faster car

Astronomers explain retrograde with a highway. When a faster car overtakes a slower one, the slower car seems, for a moment, to slide backward against the trees behind it. Nobody in either car is reversing. It is a question of angles and speeds.

Mercury is the fastest planet, and roughly every 116 days it swings around the near side of the Sun relative to us. For about three weeks of that swing, it appears to drift backward. Then the angle changes again, and it appears to move forward. The reversal exists only in the view from Earth.

V

Figure V. Two cars on a highway. One seems to slide backward. Neither one is reversing.

Neville Goddard said the same thing about your life, decades before most people had heard of retrograde. In Your Faith Is Your Fortune (1941):

“Change your conception of yourself and you will automatically change the world in which you live.”

Neville Goddard · Your Faith Is Your Fortune, 1941

What looks like your life going backward, the delay or the old pattern returning, is very often the view from the state you are standing in. Change the standpoint, and the loop straightens out.

Chapter Five

Neville and the stars

Neville was not a stranger to astrology. In a lecture on November 4, 1968, titled No Other Foundation, he admitted it plainly:

“Many believe in astrology. I must confess at one time I did also.”

Neville Goddard · No Other Foundation, November 4, 1968

The lecture’s title comes from Paul’s line that no other foundation can be laid, and Neville read that foundation as human imagination. He did not ask anyone to stop looking at the sky. He simply refused to give it the job of deciding.

His own teacher worked the same way. When Neville wanted to sail home to Barbados in the winter of 1933 with no money, Abdullah did not consult a calendar or wait for a better season. He said one sentence, you are in Barbados, and Neville slept in that state until the ticket arrived.

VI

Chapter Six

Review, redo, revise

Here is the part worth keeping from the retrograde tradition. Its themes are all words that start with re: review, revisit, reconsider, redo. The past comes back around. Old conversations reopen.

That is Neville’s revision technique almost exactly. Each night, you replay the day’s scenes the way you wanted them to go, until the revised version feels natural, and you fall asleep inside it. Most people spend the retrograde rehearsing what went wrong. You can spend it rewriting it, the same way you can use the hour the clocks give back.

And the old flame who reappears? Retrograde did not send them. If you want someone back, the work is the same as any other month: assume the relationship already restored. See manifesting an ex back.

Stand somewhere else

Mercury goes direct on November 13. You don’t have to wait for it. The loop was only ever a matter of where you were standing.

How to use Mercury retrograde with the Law of Assumption

  1. Name what feels like it’s going backward. One situation: the delay, the silence, the old pattern. Just one.
  2. Revise one scene each night. In the state akin to sleep, replay a moment from the day the way you wanted it to go, and fall asleep inside the new version.
  3. Stop narrating the retrograde. Each time you catch yourself thinking of course, it’s retrograde, swap in a sentence from the end. That is the mental diet.
  4. Overhear the good news. Imagine two friends saying, casually, that it all worked out. That is the eavesdropping technique.
  5. Don’t wait for November 13. Assume the end today. When Mercury goes direct, it will find you already there.

What this lesson is not saying

  • MisconceptionThat manifestations fail during Mercury retrograde.ActuallyWhat hardens into fact is the state you persist in. The planet can only affect you to the degree that you assume it will.
  • MisconceptionThat you shouldn’t start anything until Mercury goes direct.ActuallyIn the Law of Assumption the beginning is inner, and it can happen any night. Use whatever practical caution you like with contracts; your assumption doesn’t need to wait.
  • MisconceptionThat you have to give up astrology to use the law.ActuallyNeville himself once believed in it. The law doesn’t ask you to stop looking up. It just doesn’t need the sky’s permission. The same goes for 11:11 and every other date.
  • MisconceptionThat old problems resurfacing means you’re going backward.ActuallyThey are coming back to be revised. Treat each one as a scene to rewrite, not a sign.

Mercury Retrograde and Manifestation: Questions Answered

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

Mercury is retrograde three times in 2026: February 26 to March 20 in Pisces, June 29 to July 23 in Cancer, and October 24 to November 13 in Scorpio. Dates can shift by a day depending on your time zone.

Does Mercury actually move backward during retrograde?

No. Retrograde motion is apparent, not real. As Earth and Mercury travel around the Sun at different speeds, the angle between them changes, and for roughly three weeks Mercury seems to drift backward against the background stars. Astronomers have understood it as an effect of the observer’s position since Copernicus.

Can you manifest during Mercury retrograde?

Yes. In Neville Goddard’s Law of Assumption, what hardens into fact is the state you assume and persist in, not the position of a planet. Mercury retrograde can only affect your results to the degree that you assume it will, because an expectation of setbacks is itself an assumption.

What did Neville Goddard say about astrology?

In his lecture No Other Foundation, given on November 4, 1968, Neville said: “Many believe in astrology. I must confess at one time I did also.” He went on to teach that imagination, not any outer influence, is the one foundation on which your experience is built.

Is Mercury retrograde a good time to manifest an ex back?

Retrograde is associated with the past returning, which is why so many people report hearing from exes. In the Law of Assumption, the timing comes from your state, not the planet. If you want someone back, assume the relationship already restored and live from that state; the season can remind you, but it does not decide.

What should I do during Mercury retrograde, according to the Law of Assumption?

Use the season’s theme of reviewing and redoing for Neville Goddard’s revision technique. Each night before sleep, replay a scene from the day that went wrong the way you wanted it to go, and fall asleep in the revised version. Guard your inner conversation from blaming the planet, and keep assuming the end.

Why does everything seem to go wrong during Mercury retrograde?

Partly because people are primed to notice it. When millions of people expect delays and miscommunication for three weeks, ordinary mishaps get filed as proof. In Neville’s terms, an expectation held with feeling is an assumption, and assumptions harden into fact, which is the strongest reason not to adopt the retrograde story about yourself.

When does Mercury go direct in November 2026?

Mercury stations direct on November 13, 2026, ending the third and final retrograde of the year, which began on October 24 in Scorpio.
